Brian took me to see my grandmother after work yesterday and she isn't doing well. She doesn't have much longer. Seeing her go downhill so quickly was quite a shock for me. Three weeks ago she was sick, but coherent. Now she is seems already gone. It is heartbreaking to see her this way and just as painful to see my Papa's heart break. I wonder how God decides who will go fast and painless and who will linger, suffering for a long period of time, before he finally brings them home?
After the emotional visit, we went to the farm to meet our pig farmer to check on Jimmy's infection. Jimmy is the show pig, remember. Before he arrived, we discovered one of the chickens had died. Ken could care less, but Kamryn was devastated. Here was our conversation:
Kam: Wails uncontrollably.
Me: "Kam, chickens have very small brains, and I don't think they can even feel pain. Besides, it got to go to heaven! You should be happy for it.
Kam: ((after a slight pause and still in tears)) "But did it get saved?"
Me: ((after a rather lengthy pause)) "Animals don't know how to sin. They only do what they need to do to survive, and don't know right from wrong, so they don't have to be saved. They all go to heaven"
I have no idea what the appropriate response should have been, but this is what made sense to me. She seemed to understand. My sweet, sensitive girl.
Earlier that evening Kam worried that her pig may actually win the show and started to cry. ((sigh)) The winning pig must be sold. She can't bear the thought of selling her precious Jimmy. I hope we aren't the one that has to buy him if he wins.
The pig had an infection that had to be relieved. I'll spare you the details. As that was done, Kam turned to me and asked, "Will I have to do that when I am a vet?" I replied, "You won't mind. It will keep him from dying." She was OK with that. Plus I told her about how much a vet would have charged for that procedure and that helped even more!
